Why Ball Control Is the Most Important Skill in Soccer

June 12, 2026 by Paul Jackiewicz Leave a Comment

ball control in soccer

Every skill in soccer sits on a foundation. Passing requires it. Shooting requires it. Dribbling, turning, pressing, and creating all depend on it. That foundation is ball control. Strip away the tactics, the athleticism, and the set pieces, and soccer is fundamentally a game about who can control the ball more effectively under pressure. The […]

7 Soccer Drills to Improve First Touch at Home

June 8, 2026 by Paul Jackiewicz Leave a Comment

soccer first touch drills

Ask any coach what separates a good player from a great one, and first touch comes up every time. Your first touch controls the entire tempo of your next action. A clean touch buys you time, creates space, and opens options. A poor one kills the play before it starts by collapsing distance between you […]

How to Build Confidence in Young Soccer Players

How to Build Confidence in Young Soccer Players

Watch any youth soccer match long enough and you’ll spot it immediately, the player who hesitates before every touch, who passes when they should shoot, who shrinks when the game gets tight. Then look at the player next to them: same age, maybe even less raw ability, but completely at ease with the ball, willing […]

5 Mistakes That Are Holding Young Soccer Players Back

April 6, 2026 by Paul Jackiewicz Leave a Comment

young soccer mistakes

Every parent wants to see their young player thrive on the pitch. But talent alone doesn’t guarantee development. In youth soccer, it’s often the small, overlooked habits and mental gaps that separate players who plateau from those who keep climbing. After working with hundreds of youth players across all age groups and skill levels, at […]

How Often Should a Youth Soccer Player Do Private Training?

If you’re the parent of a young soccer player or a player yourself you’ve probably wondered: how often should I be doing private training? Too little, and you won’t see the progress you’re looking for. Too much, and you risk burnout, overuse injuries, and diminishing returns. The answer depends on your age, current skill level, […]

I came to Touch Lab/ Coach Paul to help my son (plays 6U) who loves soccer, with better dribbling, ball control and to overcome hesitation with shooting. After just 4 sessions I’ve seen so much improvement in my son’s skills he’s become one of the strongest players on his team. Coach Paul is patient and makes the training sessions fun. My son is benefiting greatly from the sessions so far and I hope to have him work with him more in the future as he continues in the sport.

We just moved to the area from Georgia and joined a soccer travel club. It was a bit of a culture shock to practice only twice a week instead of three, so we wanted to find some additional training. We were introduced to Paul from Touch Lab Soccer Training. I have a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old who both look forward to training with him. Both my sons look forward to his training sessions, and I appreciate his flexibility and training methods.
